I am well aware of the old adage that ‘the customer is always right’. It means in effect that you should always carry out the instructions given to you by a client, no matter what you think about them.

I am a great believer in communication, however, and would rather explore the client’s ideas than follow his instructions to the letter without question.

What I aim to achieve is a solution that the client is completely happy with, even if it involves ideas he would never have dreamed of.

Obviously budget plays a large part in what can be offered but I am finding clients are much more interested in work that will be durable and have a greater awareness of environmental and health concerns than they once had. People have a definite preference towards products that are environmentally friendly and that puts increased pressure on professional decorators to meet these high demands.

A typical example is wall covering. PVC has been shown to be a harmful substance found in many vinyl wall coverings. It has been associated with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

I will always suggest that the client consider using wall coverings made from non-toxic materials and that are free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In addition wall coverings that are breathable should be considered as they allow moisture to pass through and reduce the likelihood of mould developing.

So perhaps that adage should be that while the customer is always right, the professional always knows best!
